A Darkness Ablaze, written
by local author and Civil War historian, Joseph Kinyoun Houts, Jr.,
chronicles the evolution of the Confederate medical service and how it
coped as the Civil War progressed and the caseload of patients continued
to grow.
The book presents a chilling, detailed account of American
medicine during the Civil War. The basis of the book is the Medical Diary
of the author’s great-great-grandfather, Dr. John Hendricks Kinyoun,
regimental surgeon of the Sixty-Sixth North Carolina Infantry Regiment.
Dr. Kinyoun served with this unit from September 1863 until April 1865,
when his regiment surrendered at Durham Station, North Carolina, at the
war’s conclusion. [Contributed by St. Joseph Museums,
