Among
the several Western Missouri boys who became affiliated with Quantrill's
Missouri Confederate Guerrilla's were the Pence boys of nearby Kearney in
Clay, County Missouri. Bud and Donnie Pence were the great uncles of the
author who wrote this manuscript in the 1950's.
The nature of the Guerrilla is among the tough topics tackled by the
author. An essay on Slavery as it was observed in Clay County is very
interesting and insightful. Mr. Pence is more than skeptical about the
Yankee's purity concerning this issue. There is a wealth of information
about the Civil War in Clay County and The James-Younger Gang and the
story is very entreatingly told.
The author relied upon family stories and the reminisces of several
Ex-Guerrillas with whom he was acquainted to put this book together.
