History of the City Market

The City Market was Kansas City's earliest hub of commerce and transportation, serving as the focal point for steamboat traffic and later the railroads.  A combined entertainment and business district, the City Market also drew a criminal element that contributed to the neighborhoods decline.  Since its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, public and private cooperation has re-energized the City Market area.  Ron Miriani, a professor of history at Park University, offers an overview of the rise, fall, and rebirth of this fixture in the Kansas City community.
