Go 650 feet below the earth at the Underground Salt Mine, explore the Cosmosphere & Space Center, and roam the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Kansas

It will be four days of discovery as children take a behind the scenes look at St. Joseph through various activities including arts and crafts, games, behind-the-scenes tours, and a planetarium show.  During the camp, the students will visit such locations as Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, the Missouri Theater, Missouri Western State University, and Coleman Hawkins Park.

Fred Harvey was a visionary business man who changed the nature of railroad meals. His “Harvey Houses” were a string of eating establishments along the Santa Fe Railroad. The first restaurant, opened in Topeka, Kansas, in 1876, was considered a progressive new venture. As the company expanded into the hotel and tourism business, they began opening lunch rooms, dining rooms, and hotels every hundred miles along the railroad line, even expanding into resort facilities at the Grand Canyon. Kansas City’s Union Station became one of their busiest locations, featuring a lunch room, dining room (Westport Room), retail shops, and the company’s corporate headquarters.

The exploration will feature a 3-night stay in Sorrento with an all-day cruise to the Isle of Capri and a drive along the Amalfi coast.

The Mansion, which illustrates the cultural, architectural, and economic history of 19th century St. Joseph, will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Masterpieces of Modern Mexico from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection opens June 1 and runs through Aug. 18 at the Nelson-Atkins. The collection showcases an exceptional private collection that not only highlights the rich and vibrant artistic traditions of the Mexico of yesterday, but underscores the inventiveness and vitality of Mexican art today.

The Cape center, which officially opened March 21, 2013, is open to the public from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, Monday through Friday. At the Pacific Hall facility, historians, researchers, and genealogists can access the SHSMO’s vast manuscript, book, and newspaper collections, no matter where the materials are housed.

While in Springfield, we will visit all of the Lincoln sites, including his home, law office, and many others with a leading Lincoln authority. A highlight will be a visit to the Lincoln Presidential Museum. On the way and back, guest lecturers will provide insight about Lincoln and his world. Teachers can received continuing education credits.
